There are six established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain. The Lemosho and Shira routes approach from the west. The Rongai route approaches from the north near Kenya. All routes except Marangu descend via Mweka.
As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.
After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.
Allow our professionals to assist you in planning one of the most unforgettable trips depending on your own interests. Create the tour of your dreams based on your selected destination, time schedule, and budget. Contact us if you want to spend a wonderful vacation on top of the Africa.
If you have opted for the optional airport transfers, we will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
Pre-trek briefing at your Moshi hotel. You should be planning to arrive at least one day before the start of the trek. Today we will have a pre-trek briefing. We will also review your equipment and rent any equipment which is needed.
After breakfast and briefing, drive to Londorossi Park Gate (about a 3-hour drive). From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades. Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.
After breakfast, we continue as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. After several streams are crossed we continue over the Shira Ridge past the Shira 1 camp and on to the Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream.
From the Shira Plateau we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower we come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.
We continue up to the Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continued our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through a heavy screen towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrived at Mweka Camp and enjoyed our last evening on the mountain.
After breakfast we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Love.Posted on p k Kilimanjaro national park tour and hiking The view's were superb and guides were so much friendly and welcoming. Everyone should try Mtallo ToursPosted on Elisa L Good experience Positive points of the experience with Mtallo for the Marangu route kilimanjaro climb: - The organization has been easy, a lot of flexibility in communication and quick response from Charles. We had to change the dates at the last minute and it was no problem. - Mtallo's attention even after finishing the expedition to transport us to the airport although we stayed a few more days in Moshi. Good attention. - The team of guides and cook are very attentive. - The delicious food and the service of food, tea, etc. very good. Points to take into account and/or deal with in advance: - The guides did not speak very good English and communication was sometimes difficult. - We had a problem with altitude sickness and there were some topics that they didn't know much about (e.g. oxygen saturation). They left it to our choice whether to continue climbing or descend. - They did not have oxygen for emergencies although they indicated it in their offer. - There was no initial check of the equipment and already on the route they found that we did not have enough shelter for the summit. Although they got everything they needed to lend us. - Tips. We had previously considered a budget but they told us their estimate and we had to come up with that amount (tip per day in USD: 25 guide, 20 assistant, 15 cook, 10 porters).Posted on Kilifoothill Expedition 5 Days , 4 Nights safari to Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater and Tarangire. See you soonPosted on Georgina G MTALLO TOURS GAVE US THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER, Mtallo tours have given me and my partner the best experience for our trip as a couple. They are very friendly, patient and so understanding They made us feel like a part of their family. They did not rush us at any point. We had tour to tarangire, ngorongoro and masai village but their level of customer service made us want more, for that reason I and my partner plan another tour with mtallo. We like the team, Charles our organisee and Meta our driver. Charles was very charming from the first day he came to meet at at bright star hotel to the last day, My partner on the very first day, he even said this Young man works with passion. On the other hand Meta is calm relaxed confident and careful driver, we definitely felt safe in their company Their duo team was a dream team, we even named them bad boys for life as the team somehow resembles the characters in that movie. On our activities they were constant good listeners and answered all our question and on top of it all. They literally became our photographers for the whole trip, they would always help us to get the best pictures. We enjoyed their kinda of jargons terminology among the tour people hearing the driver saying funny names like Sharubu, shingo, mbuzmbuz, masikio, wajuu, wa chini and others i can't recall. Mtallo tours are the best, and my boyfriend who is from Germany even said he wants the same guys for his next safari in Tanzania.
